Lately I’ve done a major change in my studio setup: I decided to bypass the phono preamps of my Urei 1620 and use new external preamps. This might sound stupid but I grew up with everybody telling me about the legendary sound the original 1620 has and I was really affraid to alter when using an external pre-amplification stage. My generation consider the Urei as a sacred mixer. I know people who use this unit just a phono preamp or to warm up the sound of records they sample for their productions.
Anyway, no risk no fun! So after some talks with the pros at phonophono showroom, we decided the Lehmann Audio BlackCube would sound good with the music I play (mainly electronic).
Back in the studio I’ve done tests for a couple of weeks & WoW! I never imagined such a little box would have that much impact on my sound, this is just fantastic. The sound definition is much better now, I feel there is also more dynamic & a larger stereo. The kick remains fat, but is more precise which I like very much. This little black box really rocks! Long time no post … the last weeks have been rather busy, travelling here and there, no time to write really.
Anyway, a good surprise was waiting for me when I get back home last sunday: the Isonoe isolators I ordered at htfr a few weeks ago. I’ve been looking for a reliable Isolation system for a while already, I tried various stuffs, the latest being the funky freefloat … a real bad experience.
All research I’ve done on the web about Isonoe products made me think this is worth trying it & so far I’m very happy with it. Simple but solid design, easy to set up & excellent results.

This week, a dub podcast from stereogames. Some cool vibes to start the week!
There are some days I’m really bored with the uggly weather we have here in Berlin: it’s wet, it’s cold, it’s dark and it’s cloudy. Those are the days I’m thinking about holidays, sea, sun, mojitos and electronic music on the beach. I want sun & balearic beats!
The video below shows Mathieu Berthet, audio engineer in Paris, specialized in vinyl mastering ; he shows us quickly the successive steps to proceed to the vinyl mastering of a track, before its sending to the pressing plant:
Step 1. Premastering. Tthe goal is to enhance and improve the overall quality of the sound (equalization, compression, and spatialization)
Step 2. The track is cut on a vinyl support (laquers)
Step 3. The lacquers are put in a box and are going to the pressing plant. (Celebrate, Optimal Media, MPO, Record Industrie … ) Read more
