Beware! this mixer makes people crazy
Posted by DJ-ONE | November 17, 2008I remember the first time I plugged in this mixer, ouch!
A moment ago a very close friend, probably my best friend, who’s now running a cool dj shop in Paris among other activities told me he got an old but amazing second hand mixer for sale. Urei 1620 he said. I immediately googled it and the first video I found is the one below. This made me laugh a lot at first but also somehow catched my attention so I decided to check this funky stuff the next day, very curious but also very sceptical, especially when I saw how basic the unit looks like. So we plugged it very quickly in the studio and played a few 12′, and wow! In love at first kick!
None of us ever heard any mixer sound like this and we’ve already tested 99% of what’s available on the market. The sound was so amazing from the first kick one. I never heard anything like this before. As I heard it I needed that shit like a junky needs his dope. We called Alain who owned the unit to talk a bit and bargain the deal a bit. We could hear from hiw voice how much passionate he was for mixer, he teached us the Urei legend and told us many chronicles, nice moment.
I’m playin’ on it every day since then and I enjoy it like the first time on & on. This completely changed my perspective on music and how to dj. This mixer is a great source of inspiration.
I’m happy I found many people around me who share the same passion for this great engine. Some of them are linked here under “hard division” and I promise I’ll tell you a bit more about each of them soon. Until then, have fun!

Hi,
I stumbled upon your site via your flickr photostream and when I read this I completely understood what you are saying! I recently bought my urei 1620 and I love it to pieces.
Last thursday I was in paris and visited a recordshop (12 inch records) might this be the one you are talking about?
I also wanted to ask about the modified technics SL 1200 from your photostream, what modifications have been done to it? I love the feet you put on it.
please mail me back matthiasvanoyen at gmail dot com
Yeah! 12 inch is super cool, really really nice shop.
have you seen their dj-booth? also the large jbl speakers are cool. now i live in berlin and i miss this place very much. hopefully i’m travelling there often;-)
the urei is a great mixer, congratulations, good choice!
the modified technics are from Germany, modified locally. a friend of mine bought them on ebay a few months ago. the tonearm is from Rega, it’s affordable and makes the sounds much much better. the feets, you can find them easily on the net in hi-end hifi shops.
today i got a lehmann audio external preamp, i’ll write about it here soon. it’s just great!
works perfeclty with the urei.
cheers
